======================================================
A group of about twenty Peace Activists braved the wind
and rain and vehicles spraying curtains of water to stand in affirmation for
peace. The group met at the
fountain at Lincoln Square in Arlington, then walked to the Collins Street
overpass of Interstate 30, carrying banners of Peace, signs affirming I STAND
FOR PEACE and END THE WAR placards.
Some held up signs for the vehicles traveling on I-30 to see while others
held their signs for the heavy traffic on Collins Street to see.
Motorists were generally supportive, thumbs-up outnumbered thumbs-down by
about 200-1. Some in the group
distributed flyers proclaiming the I STAND FOR PEACE message to the motorists
stopped at the traffic light, while the ever-vigilant Arlington Police force
came by every five to ten minutes to check on the activities.
The event was sponsored by Peace and Justice Center Arlington, a local
group involved with peace education and nonviolence training. The flyer and the I STAND FOR PEACE
message is one in the Gandhian model of nonviolence and standing for the change
we want to see in the world. The
message:
I stand for
peace.
I
stand for justice.
I
stand for equity.
I
stand for freedom.
I
stand for solidarity.
I
stand for diversity.
I
stand for sustainability.
I
stand for internationalism.
I
stand for democracy and autonomy.
I
stand for a world whose political, economic,
and social
institutions foster solidarity, promote
equity,
maximize participation, celebrate
diversity,
and encourage full democracy.
I
stand for peace and justice and, more,
I pledge to work for peace and
justice.
